National Road Race / Criterium Champion 2010!!!

It was all Katrina Howard (Fresno, Calif./Vapor Racing) again today as the 14-year-old lapped the field to collect her ninth overall national title in the 13-14 women’s criterium contest. Howard took off in pursuit of eventual silver medalist Emma White (Delanson, N.Y./Capital Bike Racing Club) and simply kept going until she caught the back of the nearly 20-rider field. Howard attacked off the front at the end of the 20^th and final lap, winning the sprint even though she had a lap on the field. White came in second and yesterday’s road race silver medalist Laurel Rathburn (Monument, Colo.) finished third.

“She took off and everyone just kind of looked at each other,” said Rathburn. “We tried to work together, but obviously not well enough.”

The 13-14 women’s race provided another exciting finish with four-time road race national champion Katrina Howard (Fresno, Calif./Vapor Racing) out sprinting her lead group of three. Mid-way through the five-lap, 30-kilometer event, Howard was able to bridge up to leaders Laurel Rathbun (Monument, Colo.) and Kirsten Williams (Lonetree, Colo./Natural Grocers).

“The moto said they were 25 seconds ahead and I knew I couldn’t let that go, so I attacked,” explained Howard after collecting yet another Stars-and-Stripes jersey. “I looked back and (the field) wasn’t behind me so I just had to drill it.”

Once amongst the leaders Howard, a powerful sprinter, hung on until the last 250-meters where she turned on the jets and collected her eighth overall Stars-and Stripes jersey.
